Who can join?

Anyone who lives or works anywhere in Northumberland can join Northumberland Credit Union Ltd. Adults over 18 are full members who can apply for loans, vote at the AGM to elect the Board members and other officer or stand for the Board themselves.

To join - phone or write to us for a membership pack (or download pack from here) and return the application form, with proof of identity (eg passport, driving license) and proof of address (eg a bill) - or come along and talk to our volunteers at one of the regular paying in points (see How to find us).

We charge a one off joining fee of £2.00, to cover administrative expenses.  You can either send this with your application or have it deducted from your first payment.

Junior Membership

Younger people - under 18 - can join as junior members, and can earn 3% pa on their savings but are not eligible for loans. Up to the age of 12, junior members must have their application form and any withdrawals signed by a parent, guardian or other responsible adult. Junior members over 12 can join and withdraw their savings against the own signature.

Junior Membership is free - and there is no joining fee for a junior member converting to full membership at age 18.

How much can I borrow?

•  You can apply for your 1st loan when you have saved regularly for 6 weeks (2 months if paying monthly).  You can then borrow up to £100 more than you have saved.  For instance, if you have saved £60, you can borrow £160.

•  If you pay off that loan properly, you qualify for a 2nd loan of up to 3 x value of savings, up to a maximum of £250 more than you have saved.

•  After paying off that loan, you qualify for a 3rd loan of 3 x value of savings.

•   After paying off that loan, you can borrow up to 4 x times value of savings, up to a maximum of £2,500.
