Saving money is really important – whether it is just for a rainy day or for something a little bit more special. And everyone benefits from having savings – no matter how much or how little money you have. Having some savings allows us to work towards our financial goals and gives us peace of mind should an emergency arise.

Committing yourself to a regular saving pattern can be difficult, but at Northumberland Credit Union we make it as easy as possible, with several ways to save. Whether it’s in cash at one of our paying in points, with a standing order, direct from your wages or by direct transfer from your bank – at Northumberland Credit Union there are many convenient ways to save.

Residents of Berwick Borough Housing (BBH) can get an AllPay card under the 'Berwick Savings & Loans' scheme, which will allow them to pay into their account at any AllPay outlet. Contact BBH tel 08000 461 451 for more info.

We also offer easy payroll deduction for employees of Northumberland County Council (and can set this up for other employeers). By transferring regularly from your wages straight to your credit union account you can watch your savings grow. Credit Union members can save at an affordable level – be it £2 or £100. Small regular amounts soon add up and remember, at Northumberland Credit Union, you are not just a customer of a credit union - you are a co-owning member.

Once you have become a member there are lots of easy ways for you to be able to pay into your account and start building your savings. Remember ou can pay in to increase your savings or pay loan instalments.

You can pay in:

You can pay in at one of our Paying in Points with cash or cheques (made payable to Northumberland Credit Untion Ltd). All members wishing to use a Paying in Point will be given a pass book.

You can pay-in at any NCC Information Centre which accepts cash. Where a secure cash deposit machine is used, fill in your personal details on a deposit envelope. Write 'NCUL' in the blank line for 'other payments', together with your NCUL credit union membership no. if known (eg N011), and the amount you are paying. Seal payment in envelope and follow instructions on reverse. Keep the receipt in your passbook.

If you have a bank current account you can tell your bank to make regular payments into your credit union savings account. Use the standing order form, complete it, and bring or send it to us. We will send it on to your bank. Every three months we will send you a statement of your account.

You can make a one off direct bank transfer using your online account by making the transfer to our account and including your membership number in the reference field, the account number and sort code can be found on the standing order form.

Younger people - under 18 - can join as junior members, and can earn 3% pa on their savings but are not eligible for loans. Up to the age of 12, junior members must have their application form and any withdrawals signed by a parent, guardian or other responsible adult. Junior members over 12 can join and withdraw their savings against the own signature.

Junior Membership is free - and there is no joining fee for a junior member converting to full membership at age 18.

To join - phone or write to us for a membership pack (or download pack from here) and return the application form, with proof of identity (eg passport, driving license) and proof of address (eg a bill) - or come along and talk to our volunteers at one of the regular paying in points (see How to find us).

We charge a one off joining fee of £2.00, to cover administrative expenses.  You can either send this with your application or have it deducted from your first payment.
